Overview
Aims
to make students more familiar with the screenwriting domain
to encourage and educate the creativity of the students
to refine the capacity of cinematographic analysis of the students
Course contents
In this course, students will go deeper into Syd Field’s approach to screenwriting. As a starting point, the class may explore whether the creation of a film always follows a trajectory from an abstract idea toward its realization in concrete details (an author might choose a theme and expand it -see Dumitru Carabăț’s concept of "thematic expansion"), or whether there are other possible paths, strategies in the development of a cinematic artistic project. The course will explain the construction of the narrative arc and the meaning of concepts as ”turning points”, ”sequences”, and ”scenes” (as defined by Syd Field).
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- discuss the potential steps involved in creating a film;
- define and correctly use terminology related to "narrative arc construction," "turning points," sequences, and scenes (Syd Field);-
- break down a film segment into scenes and sequences;
- identify the turning points in various films.
Assessment
The grasp of new concepts will be assessed through discussions, personal creative work, and film analysis.
