Course aims:

Basic knowledges on the hazardous substances, their sources and impact on the environment and human health.
Knowledges on the EU and international legislation related to hazardous substances.
Knowledges on the management of hazardous substances.

1. Regulatory framework for the administration of chemicals. European Chemicals Agency 2-3. European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures 4. Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) - European Union Regulation (EC/2006/1907) 5. Chemicals Safety Management. Chemical safety data sheet. Chemical safety assessment 6. Exposure scenarios. Chemical safety reports 7-8. Seveso III Directive (2012/18/EU). Safety management system 9-10. Risk Management of Chemicals. Risk assessment and the control of the existing substances. Data reporting 11. Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Directive EU 2019/1021 12. European Council on mercury. Minamata convention on mercur. Vienna convention and Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. 13. Hazardous chemical waste management. Basel convention on the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes and their disposal 14. Strategic approach to international chemicals management (SAICM)

Learning outcomes:

- Identifying the interactions between sources of pollution and environmental factors - Applying the basic concepts of risk and environmental management - Cooperation with institutions with responsibilities in environmental protection - EU and international legislation related to the hazardous substances.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

A one-hour written examination (60% of the final grade). Examination of the practical abilities (20% of the final grade) and one project presentation (20%).
