Course aims:

Exhaustive knowledge of the integrated environmental monitoring system.
Acquiring the necessary knowledge for selection of the environmental indicators used in the environmental impacts analysis
Exhaustive knowledge on the assessment of the environmental quality

Course contents:

COURSE CONTENTS: 1-2. Basics on the environmental monitoring system (aims, functions, objectives etc.). 3. General structure of an environmental monitoring system. Integrated environmental monitoring systems 4. Advanced analytical techniques used in environmental monitoring 5-7. Management and monitoring of the water environment. Generalities. Sources of water pollution. The new concept of integrated water monitoring. The water monitoring network. Water Framework Directive 2000/60/CE. River basin management plans. Data analysis and specific data requirements. Romanian and UE legislation. 8-9. Soil and sediment monitoring programs. Sediment/soil sampling, sample preparation, grain size corrections, and chemical criteria. Sediment/soil physical parameters and techniques. Integrated process studies. Romanian and UE legislation. 10-12. Surface-atmosphere exchanges of chemical compounds and global change. Sources of air pollution. Air quality guidelines. Gas emission monitoring (sampling, analysis, reporting). Gas immission monitoring. Air Emissions Inventories. Romanian and UE legislation. 13. Biomarker approaches for ecotoxicological biomonitoring at different levels of biological organization 14. Noise monitoring. LAB WORKS/PROJECT: 1. Basic principles for the experimental measurement of the pollutants from air, water, and soil samples. 2. Research methodology for air quality monitoring. Dispersion models for air pollutant. Air quality standards. Experimental determination of gaseous pollutants (CO, SO2, CO2, NH3). 3. Atmospheric emissions inventories. Case studies. 4. Assessment the water pollution. Water quality standards. Water sampling. Experimental determination of water quality parameters (TDS, turbidity, CCO-Mn, COD). 5. Assessment the soil pollution. Soil quality standards. Soil sampling. Calculation of soil quality indices. 6. Noise maps. Standards on noise. 7. Project presentation

Learning outcomes:

- Qualitative and quantitative evaluation of natural phenomena and human activities affecting the quality of the environment - Identifying and applying advanced methods for an integrated environmental monitoring according to legislation. - Developing professional projects using the methods of modelling and simulation of environmental processes, based on the monitoring results.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

A one-hour written examination (60% of the final grade). The examination of the practical abilities acquired in the laboratory (20% of the final grade). Project presentation (20%).
