Course aims:

Correct use of epidemiological concepts (sources, transmission, susceptible population, determinants)
Description of epidemiological processes in major infectious diseases
Identification of general/specific prevention and control measures (including HAIs)
Understanding benefits/risks of active and passive immunization
Conducting an epidemiological investigation and formulating correct explanatory hypotheses
Knowledge of decontamination/sterilization methods and their application

Course contents:

  1. Fundamentals of Epidemiology I – Sources of infection, transmission routes
  2. Fundamentals of Epidemiology II – Susceptible population, risk factors, manifestations
  3. Epidemiology of influenza and HIV/AIDS
  4. Epidemiology of respiratory-entry diseases (measles, rubella, meningococcal meningitis, mumps, pertussis, streptococcal infections)
  5. Epidemiology of viral hepatitis
  6. Epidemiology of digestive-entry diseases (acute diarrhea, dysentery, foodborne infections, poliomyelitis); skin-entry diseases (tetanus)
  7. Epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections – definition, classification, etiology, risk factors, prevention and control

Teaching methods:

Lecture, Heuristic Conversation (guided questioning/discussion), Instruction using audiovisual media

Learning outcomes:

Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge required for the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
