To exemplify the forms of evolution of the Romanian literature (epochs, currents, genres, etc.) and to interpret the literary phenomenon in historical and cultural context. Explanation of key concepts in understanding Romanian literature
Course contents
1. Synthetic view on Romanian literature in diachronicity: periodization and contextualization 2. The beginnings; The Chroniclers; D. Cantemir; The Ardelean School; the (pre) romantic stage; Ion Budai Deleanu 3. The era of the Great Classics (M. Eminescu, I. Creangă, I.L. Caragiale, I. Slavici, Titu Maiorescu). 4. Literature from the end of the century. XIX - beginning of the century. XX (sowing and populism; symbolism (G. Coşbuc, O. Goga, Al. Macedonski, G. Bacovia) 5. The interwar period in Romanian literature: cultural directions and literary (traditionalism and modernism); representatives of literary prose and criticism (Liviu Rebreanu, Camil Petrescu, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, G. Călinescu, E. Lovinescu, Mihail Sadoveanu, Mircea Eliade) 6. The interwar period in Romanian literature: representatives of poetry (Tudor Arghezi, Lucian Blaga ş.a.); avangarda românească 7. The post-war period (1945-1989): Romanian literature in the communist regime; the 1950s and "new literature"; the '60 generation (Nichita Stanescu); representatives of prose (Marin Preda, Vasile Voiculescu); postmodernism (M. Cărtărescu)
Learning outcomes
Incorporating in a unitary and coherent structure the main moments in the chronological evolution of Romanian culture and literature
Assessment
A two-hour written examination (50% of the final grade)Combined oral and paper, portfolio, project (25% + 25% of the final grade)
