Course aims:
To create sketches of structural elements and actions.
To know the fundamental elements of the deformable body (stresses, strains, displacements, constitutive laws, material constants, characteristic curves).
To know the fundamental hypotheses of Strength of Materials and the general methods of problem solving.

Course contents:
1. Introduction. The mechanics of the deformable body. The basics of Strength of Materials.
2. Loads, stresses and strains.
3. The centric tension and compression. Definition and examples.
4. Elements under shear force. The shear of bodies with small cross section.
5. Elements under bending.
6. Torsion of the straight bars.
7. Buckling of the straight bars.
8. Compound actions.
9. The geometrical characteristics of plane surfaces.
Teaching methods:
Lecture, discussions, case studies, practical applications.
Learning outcomes:
To identify and understand simple and compound actions. Understanding buckling. To calculate the geometrical characteristics of plane surfaces.
Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:
Final examination: 3 theoretical subjects. 70% of final grade.
Examination during the semester: submission of homework. 30% of final grade.
To pass: at least 5/10 is required.
