The aim of the course is to interpret at an elementary level the information in the bibliography and historical databases, to explain the main concepts, phenomena and historical processes
The course also aims to use the basic concepts and methods of at least one other social science or humanities or a frontier discipline.

Course contents:

• Topics and bibliography. Notions: “religion”, “religious beliefs”, “history of religions ”,“ doctrine ”,“ theology ”,“ dogma ”.

• The history of religions in modern culture: schools, methods, personalities.
• Religious beliefs and practices in Mesopotamia and the Near East.
• Religious beliefs and practices in pre-Hellenic (Crete and Mycenae) and Hellenic Greece.
• Roman religion.
• Zoroastrianism
• Judaism (I)
• The origins of Christianity; source; Jesus of Nazareth; the birth of the Christian Church.
• Religious beliefs and practices of the ancient Slavs.
• Christianity in the Middle Ages

 

Teaching methods:

lecture, conversation, exemplification.

Learning outcomes:

The main objective of the course is to introduce major topics, which can provide a comparative perspective of religious beliefs and practices, from prehistory to the so-called “religions of the book”.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

course written exam 30%, course oral exam 30%, seminar oral exam 40%
