Course content: 1. Introduction: introduction into forest economy, the advantages and disadvantages of timber structures, classification of timber structures, physical and mechanical properties, faults of timber and quality categories, protection against insects and fungus 2. The mechanical properties of timber under different loads and the factors which influence them. 3. Timber structural elements with simple cross section. The roof framing structure. 4. The design of timber structural elements with simple cross section according to Eurocode 5. 5. Timber structure connections. Cutting timber connections. 6. Wedged timber connections. 7. Timber connections with rods. 8. Glued timber connections. 9. The design of timber structural elements with compound section. 10. Timber beams. 11. Timber trusses. 12. Timber frame structures. 13. Timber arches. 14. Stiffening of the plane timber structures. Laboratory content: The design of a timber roof framing structure with 4 slopes. 1. Load evaluation: snow and wind action. 2. The design of laths. 3. The design of rafters. 4. The design of purlins. 5. The design of columns.
Presentation, discussions, case studies, practical applications
The specific competences acquired by the students after passing the subject: - Knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of timber. - Acknowledging different types of structural elements belonging to timber constructions. - Knowledge of the ultimate states of timber. - Knowledge of the design rules of Eurocode 5. - Design of timber structural elements under different loads. - Knowledge of design methods of timber elements. - Knowledge of constructive rules for timber structural elements.
Theoretical exam (50% of the final grade): Oral examination. Project: design of a roof framing structure (50% of the final grade)
