Aims

The development of skills required to design reinforced concrete structures.

Course contents

Course content 1. Introduction. Actions in buildings. Failure of structures. The limit state design principles. 2. Reinforced concrete. Types of concrete. Types of rebars. The concrete strength classes. The reinforcement strength classes. Deformations. 3. The working stages of reinforced concrete. 4. The design of reinforced concrete beams. The resistant bending moment. Rectangular simple reinforced cross sections. 5. The behaviour and the design of reinforced concrete beams under shear force. 6. Reinforced concrete beams under torsion. 7. Constructive rules for reinforced concrete beams. 8. The design of reinforced concrete slabs. 9. The design of reinforced concrete columns. 10. Pre-stressing methods. 11. Materials used for pre-stressed concrete. Adhension and anchorage of pre-stressed reinforcement. The determination of the pre-stressing force. The determination of stress losses. The state of stress after pre-stressing and the external loads of pre-stressed elements under bending. 12. The ultimate limit state of normal reinforced concrete elements. The determination of cross section transmission areas. Laboratory content 1. Mechanical experiments on reinforced concrete elements. 2. Assignment no. 1: The design of reinforced concrete beam. 3. Assignment no. 2: The design of a two-way reinforced concrete slab. 4. Assignment no. 3: The design of a reinforced concrete column

Learning outcomes

The specific competences acquired by the students after passing the subject: - Knowledge of the physical and mechanical properties of reinforced concrete. - Acknowledging different types of structural elements belonging to reinforced concrete constructions. - Knowledge of the ultimate states of steel structures. - Knowledge of the design rules of Eurocode 2. - Design of reinforced concrete structural elements under different loads. - Knowledge of design methods of reinforced concrete elements. - Knowledge of constructive rules for reinforced concrete structural elements.

Assessment

Written examination: 40% of the final grade; Practical assignments during the semester: 60% of the final grade.
