Course aims:

Provide with fundamental knowledge of EMC requirements for electronic systems, legal aspects and key arguments for EMC.
Obtaining knowledge on how and why phenomenon like Cross-talk occurs by analyzing the signal integrity.
Understanding aspects related to conducted emissions, radiated emissions, and emission susceptibility.
Evaluating critical disturbers, coupling and susceptibility and EM-compatibility.

Course Entry Requirements:

Circuit Theory and Analog Electronics

Course contents:

Introduction to EMC and the sources Common FCC and EU standards relating to EMI Transmission line characteristics, mismatch, signal integrity Non-ideal behavior of R, L and C, ferrite, common-mode chokes Introduction to Dipole, Loop, Biconical, and Log periodic Antennas Common mode noise and radiated emissions Grounding concepts Electrostatic Discharge, ESD Shielding material and technique

Teaching methods:

Lectures and practical experiments

Learning outcomes:

The students will learn several basic mechanisms of electromagnetic interference generated either by man-made or neutral type, in the frequency range from low megahertz to about 10 gigahertz. The students will be able to calculate the emissions based on the antenna characteristics and system gain. The student will be able to understand several simple EMI mitigating techniques.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

Written and oral examination
