Course aims:

To understand the basic concepts of hydrotechnical structures design and exploitation.
To understand and to acknowledge different types of hydrotechnical structures.
To understand the design methods of hydrotechnical structures.

Course contents:

1. Hydrotechnics and hydrotechnical structures. 2. The influence of hydrotechnical structures on neighboring areas. 3. The main types of hydrotechnical structures for power plants. 4. The evaluation of the energy and hydraulic power. 5. Heavy dams. 6. Dams. General aspects. 7. Floods and the causes of floods. 8. The design of hydrotechnical structures for protection against floods. 9. Hydrotechnical measurements for irrigation systems. 10. The stability of slopes and shores. 11. Water supply systems. The necessary quantity of water for supply. Water captivation. Water captivation resources. 12. Water tanks. The determination of the water tank capacity. 13. The captivation and distribution of water. The captivation pipes. The distribution pipes. The design of captivation pipes. 14. Sewerage systems and water purifying stations.

Teaching methods:

Presentation, discussions, examples, practical applications.

Learning outcomes:

Students will be able to determine the loads acting on an arched river dam. Students will be able to verify the dam’s resistance to infiltrations. Students will be able to design water supply and sewerage grids.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

Written exam (40% of final grade), laboratory portfolio (30% of final grade), tests (30% of final grade).
