Course aims:

Knowledge in quality control of building materials
Development of teamwork skills.
Knowledge of experimental methods for determining the properties of building materials.

Course Entry Requirements:

Physics, Chemistry.

Course contents:

1. Mineral binders: non-hydraulic binders. 2. Mineral binders: hydraulic binders. 3. Mortars with inorganic binders: general aspects, composition. 4. Mortars with inorganic binders: preparation, transportation, properties, types of mortars. 5. Concretes with inorganic binders: definition, classification, establishing the composition. 6. The regular heavy concrete: composition, the structure of concrete, the technology of concrete. 7. Special concretes. Final concrete products. 8. Ceramic materials: general aspects, classification, the raw material, the manufacture process, ceramic products used for buildings. 9. Glass: definition, the manufacture process, physical and mechanical properties, glass products used for buildings. 10. Metals: ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals. 11. Timber: timber products used for buildings. 12. Bitumen. Bituminous binders. Asphalt made with bituminous binders. 13. Insulating materials: thermal proof materials, soundproof materials, waterproof materials. 14. Polymers. Materials for protection and for finishing works.

Teaching methods:

Presentation, discussions, examples, case studies, practical applications.

Learning outcomes:

Students will be able to perform experiments on different building materials. Students will be able to use laboratory devices such as the hydrostatic scales, the Vicat apparatus, hydraulic press et cetera. Students will have theoretical knowledge about different building materials.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

Multiple choice test (60% of final grade), 2 practical problems (20% of final grade), tests during laboratory classes (20% of final grade).
