Course aims:

- to define, describe, and explain the key concepts, theories, methods specific to the historical discourse and to develop in students some specific skills about the quantitative and qualitative historical research;
- to identify and use the specific bibliographic and archival resources;
- to develop skills of analysis and interpretation of historical data;
- to identify the most important events and personalities which have marked the historical evolution of the Romanian Orthodox Church and the Romanian culture, and to notice the dynamics of events;
- to apply the principle of right interpretation of the historical phenomenon by the just reporting to its influence on the present.

Course contents:

1. The split of the Orthodox Church of Transylvania in 1698-1701 (the foundation of the Romanian Greek-Catholic Church); 2. The Metropolitanate of Alba Iulia (a symbol of the Transylvanian Orthodoxy and Romanian nationality) and the Habsburg Catholicism at the beginning of the 18th century (1701-1714); 3. The Romanian Greek-Catholic Church until 1728; 4. The Romanian Greek-Catholic Church after 1728 – the bishop Inochentie Micu; 5. The struggle of the clergy and the believers from Transylvania for the defense of Orthodoxy during the 18th century; 6. The Romanian Orthodoxy in Alba Iulia in the second half of the 18th century or the effort of survival aganist the unfair competition of the Greek-Catholic Church; 7. The Orthodox Church and the Greek-Catholic Church in Transylvania in the second half of the 18th century; 8. The Transylvanian national movement - Supplex Libellus Valachorum; 9. National and confessional identities in Transylvania during the 18th century; 10. Relationships of the Transylvanian Orthodoxy with the extra-Carpathian Orthodoxy during the 18th century; 11. Theological literature in Transylvania in the 18th century. The Transylvanian School (Școala Ardeleană) movement.

Lecture, exemplification, conversation, debate.

Learning outcomes:

- critical, selective and systematic attitude towards historical information; - ability of applying the principles for understanding a historical document in an appropriate manner, respectively, to take into account all elements involved (linguistic, socio-cultural, political, religious, etc.), and interpret both in a synchronous and diachronic mode; - critical reading skills on bibliographic sources and ability to initiate own research; - interpretation and critical evaluation of the history of the Romanian Church in different contexts.

Written paper-interpretative essay – 20%. Frontal evaluation/ Oral exam: 80%
