Course aims:

Description of nursing techniques and methods, within one’s own and delegated roles, by groups of pathologies
Explanation of how nursing techniques and methods act in the context of disease evolution
Performance of general and specific nursing procedures consistent with the level of training

Course Entry Requirements:

Solid knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology, and General Nursing I

Course contents:

Familiarization with the organization and functioning of the hospital/clinic; internal regulations; student roles and responsibilities; occupational safety (prevention of contamination and infection), general rules of disinfection, asepsis and antisepsis; the nurse’s workplace, direct and delegated responsibilities; handover and takeover of shifts; nursing report book; medical recommendations book; collaboration with physicians and auxiliary staff – 15h
Clinical observation chart; thermometry; measuring and weighing patients; measuring and recording respirations, diuresis, blood pressure and central/peripheral pulse; dietary regimens and diet types – 15h
Venous blood collection and urine sampling for basic biochemical tests; interpretation of results – 15h
Venous blood collection for basic hematological tests; interpretation of results – 15h
Measurement and recording of blood pressure in supine and orthostatic positions; interpretation; automated BP recording – 15h
Electrode placement and acquisition of the electrocardiogram; Holter ECG monitoring – 15h

Lecture, conversation, exemplification.

Learning outcomes:

Acquisition of general and specific competences for assessing the care needs of individuals or communities; identifying care objectives; formulating nursing diagnoses; drafting and implementing nursing care plans; and evaluating outcomes. Mastery of autonomous and delegated nursing interventions, both general and specific. Acquisition of competences for assessing learning needs in healthy or ill individuals and drafting educational plans (health education and therapeutic education). Development of therapeutic communication.
