Course aims:

Assimilation of a general knowledge of the history of the church music of Byzantine tradition from the Romanian space in general and from the Transylvanian space in particular;
Learning the basics of psaltic and linear musical notation;
Formation of practical skills in church choir singing.

Course contents:

1. Generalities about Byzantine church music (sources, semiography, modes) and its penetration into Romanian; representatives from the 8th-18th centuries (Byzantine melons and hymnographers);
2. Worship books from the Romanian Orthodox Church. Typical rules;
3. Eucharistic ecclesiology;
4. The modal framework of religious music;
5. The evolution of the text and music associated with the Eucharistic canon;
6. Types of Liturgies:
7. Eucharistic rites and rituals;
8. The first Romanian translations of church songs (early 18th century); specific Romanian songs preserved to this day; chrysanthemum reform and modern psaltic notation;
9. The Songs of the Holy Liturgy I: The Great Litany, the Antiphons (in the uniformed version and in the Transylvanian version;
10. Songs of the Holy Mass II: Come and worship - the Cherubim (in the uniformed version and in the Transylvanian version);
11. The songs of the Holy Mass III and IV.

The discipline aims to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge on the evolution of music history, musical phenomena and personalities in the field of music.

Oral exam 50%, essay and implication in course debates 50%
