Course contents:

1. Evolution of 20th-century playwriting 2. August Strindberg and his era. Bio-bibliographical landmarks 3. Aspects of the victim-possessor relationship in the theater of August Strindberg 4. Alfred Jarry, the precursor of surrealism. Jarry's work between two centuries 5. Alfred Jarry and the grotesque man in the play Ubu King 6. Luigi Pirandello. Pirandellian life and theater 7. The theatrical poetics of Luigi Pirandello. Humorous man 8. Bertold Brecht, the experimenter, in a war-torn Germany 9. Theorizing the concept of epic theater at Bertold Brecht 10. The life and dramatic work of J.-P. Sartre. The ideological determination of the theater. 11. The philosophy of "the other" in Sartre's theater 12. Albert Camus. Learning outcomes:

Iniţierea studenţilor în problematica actuală a literaturii comparate şi a criticii literare, în vederea urmăririi evoluţiei dramaturgiei secolului XX. Demersul teoretic va fi orientat spre aspectele umanităţii din teatrul secolului XX

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

A two-hour written examination (50% of the final grade)Combined oral and paper, portfolio, project (25% + 25% of the final grade)
