Teaching methods
The teaching and assessment methods are designed to help the students to attain the goals for the course, via theoretical component and practical one, respectively, where the focus is on problem solving.
Entry requirements
Students should know Strength of Materials as well as design bases of eurocodes.

Aims

The aim of Timber Construction course is to provide students the ability to analize and design timber structures.

In Timber Construction students will understand the behaviour of wood as construction material: its internal structure, anisotropy, strength, different treatment methods, and timber structural elements behaviour, respectively.

Designing according Eurocode EN 1995.

Sustainable developement of constructions involving timber structural elements.

The fire behaviour of timber is also a discussed issue.

Course contents

1. Introduction 2. Timber properties 2.1. Timber anatomy - internal structure 2.2. Physical and mechanical properties 2.3. Timber grading 2.4. Timber treatment 2.5. Timber degradation 3. Design of timber structural elements 3.1. Design basis according to EC5 3.2. Design of cross-section 3.3. Deformation calculations 3.4. Instability of timber members 4. Connections 4.1. Behaviour of timber and timber-based products under fire loading 5.2. Ignifugous treatment 6. Durability and preservation

Learning outcomes

The Timber Construction course has the main objective that future civil engineers will be able to approach a project, by analysing and designing timber stuctures, presenting in written reports and oral presentation their work.

Assessment

Written final exam (theory + Exercices): 45% + 25%; and Student performance during classes (communication or direct involvement, homeworks, tests, projects etc.): 30%
