Course aims:

The knowledge acquired will allow understanding of other courses in the fields included in the study of sacred art.
The theme allows for the knowledge of fundamental iconological elements, their understanding in the contemporary liturgical space; understanding the framework that generated a theology in images, as well as the way in which this original framework is creatively exploited.
Identifying representative monuments, trends and personalities for the field of study of contemporary art iconography.

Course contents:

Iconography of contemporary art.

Iconography of post-Byzantine tradition at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century.

Contemporary iconography between East and West.

Recovery of iconography of Byzantine tradition.

Romanian icon of post-Byzantine tradition in the diaspora.

Iconography of contemporary art between erminey and ideology.

Schools and icon masters from the contemporary period.

Iconography of contemporary art from Romania in an ethnographic context.

Lecture, debate, presentation

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will learn about the thematic evolution of iconographic programs in the space of post-Byzantine and contemporary Romanian Orthodoxy; as well as the evolution of artistic trends in the field of contemporary iconography.

To apply iconological strategies in formulating an iconographic program appropriate for a sacred space of the 21st century.

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

Oral exam 50%, Essay and project/practical work 50%
