Course contents:

1. Church and State during the persecutions.
2. Constantine the Great and the increasing role and importance of the Church.
3. Theodosius the Great - Christianity becomes the State religion.
4. The Byzantine symphony.
5. Disturbance actions of the Byzantine symphony –the Monophysitism.
6. Disturbance actions of the Byzantine symphony – the Iconoclasm.
7. Disturbance actions of the Byzantine symphony – the Monothelism.
8. The role of monks in establishing the Church-State relations in Byzantium
9. The Papacy and Byzantium.
10. Controversies between Constantinopolitan patriarchs and Byzantine emperors.
11. The emperors involvement in religious controversies.
12. The Church - a institution of the State in Byzantium.
13. The Church - the State successor after the Ottoman conquest.
14. Discussions and debates. The course evaluation.

Teaching methods:

lecture, conversation, exemplification.

Learning outcomes:

The lecture tries to analyze the specific problems of the Church-State relationship during the Byzantine history.

 

Learning outcomes verification and assessment criteria:

Written paper - 70%; continuous assessment - 30%.
